LACMA’s South Asian Department and the South Asian Council are pleased to present a multi-media lecture focused on Lagaan, the 2001 Academy Award nominated Bollywood epic film.  Lecturer, performer and Fulbright scholar Robin Sukhadia will present clips from the film to contextualize Bollywood’s increasing global impact. Special emphasis will be placed on the film’s music, its distribution, the actors, and its relevance to India’s post-colonial narrative. The 45 minute lecture will be followed by a special live musical performance by SADUBAS inspired by the film’s music. Special guest Sheela Bringi joins the duo on bansuri (bamboo flute). The evening’s free and kid friendly. Dancing encouraged!

A Master in Fine Arts graduate from the World Music program at the California Institute of the Arts, Robin Sukhadia has been studying tabla under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri for the past eleven years. In 2010, Robin was awarded a Fulbright Senior Research Award to expand his work with music education in India. He is a Bollywood fanatic. Learn more at www.tablapusher.com.
